When my husband & I got engaged I’m glad to say my husband already knew me well enough to know that I would  want to ‘help’ choose the ring I’m to wear for the rest of my life.   So – perfect as the moment was, having asked Dad before and all, I was wearing a temporary greenstone ring my mum bought for me.

So - the hunt was on!  Wherever I went I clocked every ladies ring out there, which was educational – there are so many alike that was giving up hope of being able to find something just right in a jewellery shop window.

I popped into a gift shop one day for a friend’s wedding present & mentioned to the shop assistant that I loved her ring, it was really unique & looked expensive.  She was thrilled with it & I was blown away with how much she had paid compared to how it looked – next thing I knew I had Caron’s number & the brilliant possibility of being able to have anything we could dream up (as Caron had made her friend the shop assistant’s ring from a picture in a magazine).

My lovely husband was so relieved at the thought of making some progress on finally getting the ring on my finger that we called Caron & arranged to meet that weekend.

The brilliant meeting with ultra positive Caron just reiterated that the sky was the limit - as anything she hadn’t made before Caron was more than willing to attempt. Caron had some magazines & jewellery pictures to show us all we’d have to find was a picture or draw together what we wanted & she would be able to turn that iinto an actual ring – quite mind-blowing.

My only specific was a square (‘princess cut’) diamond & my husband’s imagination took over from there – he designed it really, which I think is wonderful.

Caron took our basic idea & started thinking about how it would have to go together – to look its best & to be engineered properly so it was strong enough to last forever.  One of my favourite details is Caron’s wonderfully thick band design, it’s so comfortable & strong.  Caron started putting the mock up together at the end of our second visit & had called her contact in Hatton Garden to start the hunt for the best stone we could afford.

We had a first visit to her setter in Hatton Garden, who had found a few new stones to look at however the colour & size was a bit disappointing but that’s all that he needed to know – he offered to look through the second hand market, which we were more than comfortable with, diamonds are thousand of year old after all & Caron called us the following fortnight.  Somehow the most brilliant stone had been found, really clear in colour & much bigger than I ever thought we could afford.

Caron was then in business – the real ring was made to fit the stone we had purchased, during the process of which Caron realised we would have to have a couple of very discrete struts to give the structure it’s overall strength, very clever.

My husband & I wanted the same shape of band which Caron managed to make from the same length of gold – such a lovely thought to have 2 halves of the same piece.

My wedding band has 17 diamonds set around it which the setter set at the same time as the engagement ring.  All the rings were finished just in time for Christmas & Caron managed to make time for us to run her across to the valuer to pick them up so that we had them to show the family when we were together that year (well the engagement ring was flashed around a lot, the wedding bands were on show later).

All the gold, Caron’s mock-up, design work & time worked added up to only £850 for the engagement ring, the stone cost £4,100 (well it is 4 carat!) which meant that we have a ring we would never have thought possible for the budget we had in mind.  It was valued at the time as worth 3 times was it cost us (wonder what it might be worth now – although it’s definitely not for sale)!!  Such a brilliant investment besides being able to have something we could never have attained otherwise!  My husband’s wedding band only cost £350 & my wedding band, with the 17 stones was £1,150.  They were both valued at twice that amount at the time.

We’ve since been in touch to shrink my husband’s ring, as he’d lost some weight & I’ve been to see the setter when the stone had worked itself a little loose after 5 years – we haven’t been charged for either visit & know we could call again if anything else was ever needed.

As you can tell we’re delighted with both our rings & in finding one of life’s true gems in Caron – thanks again for everything, we’ll be in touch for the matching eternity ring soon!!
